Recently, an email went out from Save Monroe informing us of a new coalition that is banding together to monitor the "expansion and development" of Kiryas Joel. We were pointed to Hudson Valley Voices to register to join this group. As editor of the site, I would like to clarify that Hudson Valley Voices is an information, opinion, and content portal, and not the "Coalition" that was mentioned in the email. I am dedicated to providing a forum for people in the community to share their ideas without fear of unjust censorship. Hudson Valley Voices is as free as can be without being vulgar or jeopardizing the personal privacy of our participants and audience. As the site has developed, I had remained relatively neutral to some hot-button local topics, including Kiryas Joel. The recent events surrounding the handling of the Camp LaGuardia property by our trusted elected officials changed that, and I made the decision to open up the site to more of the sensitive issues that have created tensions in Orange and Sullivan Counties. For the record, Hudson Valley Voices is opposed to the rampant over development that has destroyed the visual landscape of our community and stressed our resources. For now, that is the broad editorial policy on this issue. We thank Save Monroe for recognizing our site as a place for users to gather, express ideas, and use as a forum to create interest in any lawful coalition or activist group. We welcome comments and information that support the other side of the issue as well. -Johnny_A |

An open letter to all residents of the Hudson Valley who would like to form a coalition to monitor and limit the growth of Kiryas Joel:
"KJ developers" are currently poised to possibly/potentially develop some very large parcels of land in our neighborhoods, including the Camp LaGuardia campus in Chester and the Arden Hill campus in Goshen. If the population of KJ were to double and even triple in the short term, it would have devastating effects on our economy and our communities. KJ's development style disregards all of the zoning requirements in our towns, and they over-strain the social services system which is funded by us. More than half the Orange County welfare roll goes to KJ families who have an open mandate of 6-8 children per household. Doesn't seem right. If there is corruption here, we should be the ones to expose it or our cost of living here will only increase until we can't afford to raise our own families here.

"No handshake deal" Hudson Valley Voices has learned that Legislator Tom Pahucki has asked Legislator Mike Paduch (chairman, Physical Services Committee), to call a meeting between County officials and executives from Blooming Grove, Chester, and the Village of Chester. Word has it that the meeting has been scheduled for 4:00 pm today. "I asked Mike Paduch to call together the municipal leaders for a meeting to see, on the record what they want for their residents and hope that the County can negotiate something that will work for them and for us on the County level.," said Mr. Pahucki, via email correspondence with one of our sources. "And, I don't want a handshake deal or a I told you so deal but something solid and binding and in writing that reflects what was verbally agreed to. We will post more as information comes in after the meeting. |
